Winter in Nuuk, White and Bright – 5 days & 4 nights

City Sightseeing – Kapisillit Boat Tour – City Walk – Greenlandic Tapas

Greenland’s capital Nuuk is a city of vitality, surrounded by immense nature and filled with vibrant Greenlanders leading fascinating lives of old traditions, modern twists, and diverse influences.
Home to gourmet restaurants, fashion boutiques, and the Northern Lights inspired Katuaq Cultural Center, Nuuk is the center of modern Greenland. However, a stroll through the picturesque Old Harbor shows that history and traditions remain strong in this growing city.
Nuuk lies in the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fiord – the second largest fiord system in the world. This gives fantastic boating opportunities as the fiord doesn´t freeze in winter due to the strong currents. In winter there is snow guarantee in Nuuk and come February the sun starts to get strong again.

We start the day by spending 1 to 1½ hrs. with a visit at the National Museum, where a large collection of Greenlandic relics, such as mummies, kayaks, umiaks and ceremonial costumes are found. After the museum visit we walk through the old colonial harbor area, past the open-air fish and meat market, to the culture house Katuaq. The café serves Greenlandic tapas where you can try a lot of local specialties. In the afternoon it is possible to organize an optional helicopter flight to the nearest mountains and fiords. The tour takes approx. an hour incl. transfer to and from the airport. Flying time 20 minutes.

Day 3 – Boat tour to Kapisillit

At 9AM in the morning we depart on a boat tour to the fishing and hunting settlement of Kapisillit. Here there is an approx. 45-minute stay to walk around and see what winter in a small settlement is all about. After Kapisillit the boat takes you to the settlement of Qoornoq which lies in the mouth of the Ice Fiord. The settlement will be seen from the boat. This time of the year there is too much snow to go ashore. Someplace between Kapisillit and Qoornoq lunch will be taken. Maybe lying in with turned out motors in the middle of all the ice.  On the way back, the boat passes close to the frozen waterfall which in summer falls from the glacier Sermitsiaq.
