Tour to Nordafar
Have you ever dreamed of combining your love for the Arctic with the thrill of exploring an abandoned settlement? Do you feel drawn to places where history lingers in silence—where raw, untouched nature meets echoes of the past? Just south of Nuuk, you’ll find exactly that at Nordafar.
Kalaallit Inuit, the Indigenous people of Greenland, lived as nomads for thousands of years before colonisation. Because of this, abandoned and historic settlements are scattered across the vast landscapes of Kalaallit Nunaat. But Nordafar stands apart from the rest.
Unlike traditional Inuit settlements, Nordafar was an industrial fishing station, founded in the 1920s by Norwegians, Danes, and Faroese—giving the place its unique name: Nor–da–far. It quickly grew into a bustling hub of activity and opportunity, reaching its peak in the 1950s and 60s when more than 1,000 people lived and worked here.
Today, Nordafar tells a very different story. After declaring bankruptcy in the 1980s, the once-thriving settlement was abandoned, leaving behind weathered buildings, quiet docks, and a powerful sense of history frozen in time.
Now known as the “ghost town” south of Nuuk, Nordafar offers visitors a rare chance to step into Greenland’s industrial past—set against a backdrop of dramatic Arctic scenery. It’s a place where beauty and eeriness meet, where every corner sparks curiosity, and where the silence speaks louder than words.
