Old Colonial Harbour – National Museum – Greenlandic Tapas – Kaffemik
The tour begins at the Tupilak office, and our first stop is the striking Katuaq Cultural Center, Nuuk’s architectural and artistic heart. During summer, local artists often exhibit their work here, offering a window into modern Greenlandic creativity.
From there, we stroll past the Greenlandic Parliament, a symbol of Greenland’s self-governance, and continue toward the city’s oldest neighborhood: the Colonial Harbor.
This picturesque area feels like a step back in time, with historic wooden houses standing much as they did 200–300 years ago. As we walk through, your guide will share insights into Nuuk’s colonial past while pointing out key landmarks:
-
The old whale blubber processing equipment
-
Hans Egede’s House
-
The powerful Mother of the Sea sculpture in the tidal zone
-
And the iconic Hans Egede statue beside the old church
We make a brief stop at the open-air market, where locals sell freshly caught fish and seasonal game such as seal and reindeer — a glimpse into the traditional Greenlandic kitchen.
Next, we visit the Greenland National Museum, where you’ll explore fascinating artifacts from all eras of Greenlandic history and culture. From ancient Inuit tools to Norse relics and modern exhibits, it’s a must-see for understanding Greenland’s heritage.
After the museum, we return to Cafétuaq, the cozy café inside Katuaq, for a tasting plate of Greenlandic tapas. Enjoy a selection of dried fish and meats, shrimp, scallops, and other local delicacies from land and sea.
The tour concludes with a short walk (10–15 minutes) to a local home, where you’re warmly welcomed for a traditional kaffemik, a Greenlandic coffee gathering. Relax with coffee, homemade cakes, and friendly conversation, as your host shares stories about life in Nuuk and answers your questions.
